Darlington entertain Gillingham this weekend looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season but also to pick up their first win of the campaign. Quakers have been unlucky not to record three points in the league yet but will be hopeful of correcting that against a Gillingham side which appears to be coming increasingly under fire from it's supporters.
Gills manager Mark Stimson was unable to save his side from relegation last season from League One and having picked up just a single point in the two opening games supporters appear to be far from happy. The under-par start to the campaign coupled with the frustration of the previous season means supporters appear to be rapidly losing patience with Stimson. Misfiring strikers Simeon Jackson and Mark McCammon, a player who Darlington manager Dave Penney knows all about from his time at Doncaster, have hardly helped their manager's position.
Quakers are only a point better off than their opponents but in contrast Darlington fans should be pleased with their side's start. Darlington looked impressive in the first half against Exeter City, beat Walsall in the Carling Cup and turned in a good performance against Notts County where they hit the woodwork twice. Despite this Penney is still looking for his first win of the season just like Stimson.
"We would have liked three points by now obviously, but performances have been excellent. The second half against Exeter could have been better but we put that down to lack of sharpness. The other two games I think we were the better side and we were unlucky at Notts County last weekend where we hit the bar and the post. We have to start taking our chances but we've been happy enough. Now we need to record our first win as quickly as possible," said Penney.
Darlington may have the ability to name an unchanged side this weekend. Defender Ian Miller however staked a good claim to replacing Alan White in the heart of defence. Darlington born White was substituted thanks to a chest infection in the first half at Notts County but may be okay to resume against Gillingham.
Liechtenstein winger Franz Bergmeier may make an appearance on the bench for Darlington. The player has been away with his country in Albania but is due to return to the North East before Saturday so could figure in the game. Quakers have international clearance so the only obstacle will be if Bergmeier can return to England in time.
Gillingham meanwhile could have three players back. Simon Royce (illness) is expected to return while Adam Miller and Garry Richards (hamstring) are pushing for an inclusion in the squad.
