Liechtenstein international Franz Burgmeier signed for Darlington in August 2008 following the start of the campaign. The winger had a trial with Quakers before signing for the club and played alongside former Darlington forward Gaetano Giallanza before arriving in the North East.
Burgmeier started out as a youth at FC Triesen before moving to FC Vaduz in 2000. He then moved to FC Aarau in Switzerland after five seasons with the club. He was at Aarau for just one year before FC Basel snapped him up in 2006. FC Thun signed him on a six-month loan deal in January 2008. On 13 July 2008 it was announced that his Contract with FC Basel was being terminated early to allow him to find himself a new club. That new club became Darlington.
The midfielder made his international debut for Liechtenstein against Spain in September 2001 and eventually went on to win nearly fifty caps for his country.
